Terminology

A list of terms used in Betaori.

Blue – the color of tokens opposite white
Blue Side – the side of the board where blue plays from
Capture – landing a token on a square occupied by an opposing token
Direction – one of 8 directions a token can move, represented by a number
Distance – the number of spaces a token may move in a given direction
Double Siege – sieging two tokens in one turn

  • Double Ikeda – sieging two opposing tokens with 5 surrounding tokens in one move
  • Double Worthington – sieging two opposing tokens with 6 surrounding tokens in one movediagonals

Exile – a token is remove from game play for the duration of the game
Flank – a token reaching the edge of the board while still having moves left in a route continues along the path from the opposite side of the board
Grid Square – the squares on a betaori board
Hidden Route – an extra route kept hidden from the opposing player until use
Ikeda – performing a siege with 5 tokens
Korochev Maneuver – performing a resurrection and a siege in one turn
Move – relocating a token from one grid square to another
Queue – tokens that are waiting to come into play
Ransom – a post-play action where a player sacrifices some of their tokens to the opposing player in exchange for a wildcard
Reversal – a wildcard that allows a player to use the inverse of a route
Resurrection – a captured token is returned to its owner when that player captures three tokens in one turn
Route – a designated direction and distance
Route Swap – exchanging a route in a set for one that is not in use
Segura – a siege executed by placing a queue token
Siege – surrounding a token on any four sides

  • Arrow Siege – a variation of siege in which three tokens are in one corner and the fourth is in the opposite corner
  • Asymmetrical Siege – any siege that does not form one of the other variations
  • Corner Siege – a variation of siege in which all four tokens are adjacent to one another in one corner
  • Corridor Siege – a variation of siege in which tokens are divided evenly on opposite sides of the sieged token (two on one side, two on the other)
  • Cross Siege – a variation of siege in which the sieged token is surrounded by tokens in the four Cardinal directions
  • Diagonal Siege – a variation of siege in which the sieged token is surrounded by tokens in the four diagonals

Token – the game pieces, typically made of glass, either blue or white
White – the color of tokens opposite white

Wildcard – one of 12 extra cards that offer players some benefit
Worthington – performing a siege using 6 tokens
